Absolutely, but hopefully not on my property again, I think I did a fairly good job of it, I really am itching to construct another one though. What are we supposed to make of the horizontal storage shed, then? Does that mean we have to get down on our hands and knees to get inside, dragging the garden spade and hoe behind or beside us? And do they really make those horizontal “sheds” with plastics, resins, and vinyl? The answers are, no we don’t and yes they are.

Personally, the whole description of “horizontal storage shed” is a misnomer. Not everyone will agree. They are definitely for storage, as is a shed, but a storage bench, box or locker is often the better description. That is all academic, though. These little storage facilities for the yard or garden are very useful indeed, so it matters not one iota what you call it.

A small horizontal storage shed is often a convenient add on to your more traditional walk in shed, if that is getting a bit too crowded for comfort, safety and security. They are also very useful if you have a tiny yard, and simply need to lock away a few tools and other items. They are normally accessed by lifting a lid, or in some cases two lids, but not by crawling in on your hands and knees. They are a similar idea to a patio storage bench, but not designed for sitting on, although there’s nothing to stop you doing so.

While the patio storage bench is quite likely to be made of wood, the new generation of horizontal sheds from companies like Rubbermaid and Suncast are more likely to be made with that other patio furniture favorite, resin. Rubbermaid have various sizes such as the 55 inch wide and 51 inch wide units. 3 ft 6 inches is the height for both, so that gives you an idea how low and horizontal these storage “sheds” are. Suncast are well known for their resin deck boxes, which can be shorter at 22 inches and thus suitable as a patio bench as well as for storage.

Whether or not you regard these “horizontal” storage units as sheds, boxes or benches, they are definitely worth bearing in mind, especially if you want to avoid demolishing your existing garden shed simply because it is too small.

I know the feeling of needing more storage space – summer tools, four wheelers and other items piled up in a corner of the garage. You may even have a room in your house affectionately called the “junk room”.

We arrived in Georgia almost four years ago from sunny south Florida (go Gators!). We were blessed to move from a small second floor condo with zero storage space to a beautiful two story home with a two-car garage and nearly an acre of flat lawn.

We moved in at the beginning of July, so my first surprise was how much lawn equipment it took to take care of this acre of lawn, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Add to that the lumber and tools needed for my woodworking hobby. And, surprise! We needed to replace the windows soon after moving in. I was still holding on to the old windows two years later, wondering how I could make use of them in some constructive way.

There was discontentment building from within the house. Admittedly, I am not a very organized individual. My wife is… well, very organized.

OK, to make a long story short, we needed to do something to alleviate the strain. The strain of an overcrowded garage, and the strain on our relationship. There was no more room to put anything in the garage and “stuff” started to pile up behind the house.

The answer to my dilemma came when I found a great set of outdoor garden shed plans. Since I had been in construction for quite some time before finding a less physical way of earning a living, I was able to construct the shed myself with a bit of help from our neighbor, Roy.

The new structure has helped me to get much more organized. There is storage space sufficient to move all my lawn and garden tools and equipment out of the garage into the new shed. In addition, there are shelves all along the walls where things like left over paint, garden pots, and extra construction materials can be organized and out of the way.

Having the extra storage space has also made room for another car inside the garage where it should be, rather than sitting in the driveway, subject to rain, pollen, and whatever else might fall on it.

During and after the building project, I discovered a few things that I think are important enough to share:

2. Always plan for a larger shed than what you think you actually need.
3. Get quality building materials. Don’t skimp on quality, It will save you money in the long run.
4. Don’t put off a project that will renew the harmony in your home and marriage.

Things are much better now.

They may offer to do this for you with some type of commitment that you will purchase supplies from them. Sometimes they will offer this as free deal as a promotion.

Then there is always the internet. Lots of sites are willing to give away the prints and plans for free. Not because they are generous, but because they hope it will entice you to purchase some of the other items they carry.

These items are usually applicable to what they are giving you at no charge. For example if they give you all the drawings and plans you need., then you are going to have to know how to do the things that the plan says. This is where the extras come in. Perhaps the company that gave you the free shed plans sells some self help, or do it yourself books.

They would be pleased to sell these to you. This is not being sneaky. In fact its an excellent business proposal. They help you identify what you need and then offer support where you need it. With the combination of your plans, and the self help books you need, you’re ready to build one good looking shed!
